Interim Artistic Director of Non-Profit Dance Studio 

            Factory Street Studio, a 39 year old non-profit dance organization, is seeking an Interim Artistic Director for the 2017-2018 season, with the possibility to apply for a permanent position in 2018. This non-competitive dance studio is an integral part of the Athens, Ohio arts community, and is embraced for its integrity, quality, creativity, and student-oriented atmosphere. Applicants must be dynamic, passionate, creative leaders capable of bringing these qualities to the position. The Artistic Director manages, organizes, and maintains a well-established, quality dance program. The modern dance-based curriculum has a special emphasis on student composition, and also includes ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop. Factory Street Studio has a student base of 165 students, and offers 34 classes per week. In addition to working closely with the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director works intensively with every teacher and student at Factory Street Studio.

The Artistic Director (AD) works in conjunction with the Board of Directors to maintain and oversee the FSS dance education programming during the school year and summer sessions, and to pursue outreach and partnership possibilities. The AD recruits, trains, and oversees the faculty to ensure consistency and quality across class levels; mentors and supervises Ohio University student interns; and manages choreography and performance programming. The AD teaches a minimum of four classes per week in two 14-week semesters, across a range of age levels; additional teaching is possible, negotiated and compensated under a separate teaching contract. In conjunction with the Business Director and the Board, the AD organizes and produces annual Winter and Spring Concerts; communicates with parents and students about programming, schedules, and special events; produces advertising materials; writes grants; and creates yearly budgets.

Essential skills include knowledge of anatomically sound dance technique across a range of dance genres; at least three years’ teaching experience, preferably with students of varying ages and abilities; excellent organizational and communication skills; event planning experience; and ability to balance multiple priorities. An undergraduate degree in dance and successful completion of coursework in dance pedagogy are required. Preferred qualifications include MFA or other relevant graduate degree; supervisory experience; familiarity with national dance standards; and grant writing experience.
