DanceNews and Studio Updates:

Announcing the FSS New Artistic Director!

Dear Factory Street Community:
On behalf of the FSS Board of Directors, thank you all so much for being patient with us as we have worked our way through this year in absence of an Artistic Director.

We are thrilled to announce that Angelica Bell will join FSS as Artistic Director on May 14, 2018!

Angelica’s career has been dedicated to performing, teaching, and curating opportunities for community engagement through dance. She completed her BFA in Dance at San Diego State University in 2011 and proceeded to perform professionally in California and Mexico. Angelica simultaneously served as an academic coach & dance teacher for children and adults with special needs in K-12 and studio contexts. She was the Dance Director and resident choreographer at R. Roger Rowe Elementary & Middle School in Rancho Santa Fe, California, for two years before coming to Ohio for graduate school. Angelica recently earned her MFA in Dance from The Ohio State University where she taught studio-based dance classes as a Graduate Teaching Assistant to students of all ages.
She recently co-directed the OSU School Tour Company that brought a traveling dance program to eleven K-12 schools in Columbus. Additionally, Angelica facilitated teaching opportunities and collaborations in the Columbus community for undergraduate dancers at OSU. In her last year of graduate school, she extended her pedagogical research to include young children at a selected urban public school. Her teaching practice has been enriched by investigating how children understand and discuss their creative processes. Angelica is very excited to serve as the Artistic Director for FSS and join the Athens community.
You may see Angelica in and out of the studio as her start date nears – she will be popping in to observe classes and learn about the studio prior to her official start date.
We want to thank everyone who came out to participate in demonstration classes and Q&A sessions – your feedback was incredibly valuable and will help us to formulate opportunities for growth in the studio moving forward.
After an extensive search, we are so thrilled to be bringing Angelica’s expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to community dance to Athens. She’ll be a great addition to the studio!
As always, our door is open to feedback and questions.

It’s been a bit of a rough winter so far, and our current snow day policy has cancelled 32 classes. With more rough weather likely, we’ve decided to change our cancellation policy.

Often road conditions improve throughout the day, and our goal is to hold class on schedule, whenever we can safely do so. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, Factory Street will no longer cancel classes automatically if Athens City Schools are closed. Instead, on those days, FSS staff will assess conditions just prior to 1:00 pm. If, at that time, Athens County is under a Level 2 or 3 Snow Emergency the studio will be closed for the day. Otherwise, classes will proceed on schedule.

To make sure everyone is informed and can make necessary plans, FSS staff will email teachers, students, and families at 1:00 pm regardless of the decision. Students who are not able to attend will not be penalized under the FSS attendance policy.

We’re also working hard to make up cancelled classes as quickly as possible, and we’re looking at the possibility of adding an additional week of classes or make ups after the Spring concert. We’ll fill you in as the details take shape.
